Internet Oversight Body Approves New Domain Names
On November 16, 2000, the board of directors of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, the organization responsible for the Web’s address system, announced its selections for seven new Internet domains or address suffixes. The new domain names, their uses, and the organizations responsible for granting addresses using the new domains are:
| Domain
| Use
| Responsible Organization
|
| .aero
| Airlines, airports and related industries
| Societe Internationale de Telecommunications Aeronautiques SC (SITA)
|
| .biz
| Any business
| JVTeam, LLC
|
| .coop
| Business cooperatives, such as credit unions and rural electric coops
| National Cooperative Business Association (NCBA)
|
| .info
| General use
| Afilias, LLC
|
| .museum
| Accredited museums
| Museum Domain Management Association (MDMA)
|
| .name
| Individuals
| Global Name Registry, Ltd.
|
| .pro
| Professionals (requires proof of professional status)
| RegistryPro, Ltd. |
The new domain names will join the more traditional .com, .org, .net, .gov and .edu suffixes. Many experts believe that the ubiquitous .com name has become saturated. For the moment, ICANN has rejected proposals for other new domain names such as .kids for sites containing material for children and .xxx for adult content sites. For a history of ICANN’s process for selecting new domain names, refer to ICANN’s website.
ICANN will work through the end of the year to negotiate registry agreements with the applicants selected. The proposed registry agreements must then be approved by the board of directors of ICANN. Following approval of the registry agreements, ICANN will forward its recommendations for implementation of the seven new domain names to the U.S. Department of Commerce. The new domains are not expected to be available until mid-2001.
ICANN has not reached registry agreements with the selected applicants, and the organizations listed above may not be authorized to take registrations for the new Internet domain names. Please monitor our website for further information about the ability to register the new domains. In addition, no person or organization is authorized to “pre-register” any of the new domain names. If you attempt to pre-register any of the new domains you do so at your own risk and with no assurance that you will receive the pre-registered Internet domain name once the new domains go into effect. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission recently issued a consumer alert warning about scam artists offering services along these lines. For more information, please refer to the FTC’s consumer alert.
