Horst Antes

Horst Antes is the principal representative of the “Fantastic Realism” movement and a significant 20th Century artist, both as a painter and a sculptor. The sculpture on display in our lobby is a depiction of a common theme in Antes’ work: the “Kopfüssler” or “Head-Foot” — a large head, eye or foot without a body. This motif first appeared in 1962 in his painting “Large Blue Figure” and is repeated throughout Antes’ later work. Antes created his first sculpture in 1963, and the first depiction of the head-profiles which dominated his sculpture in subsequent years first appeared in 1966.

Our Antes’ sculpture is made of Cor-Ten steel, which naturally oxidizes to a brownish-red color unaffected by further weathering. Antes also utilized Cor-Ten steel in a famous series of eight man-sized heads designed in 1975-1976 for the Institute of Anorganic Chemistry at Karlsruhe University. One side of our sculpture features a hand in relief, while the obverse includes a raised hand, as well as the incised outline of a kneeling figure. This kneeling figure is also a common Antes theme, repeated in chrome-nickel steel, for example, in his sculpture “Kopf für Martin Buber” (head for Martin Buber).
